Drawing & Painting
This class is a combination class that teaches introductory and advanced techniques in drawing and painting. Throughout the course students will work with and become familiar with the formal elements of art and principles of design. Through this course students will work with graphite and colored pencil, ink, charcoal, pastels, watercolor, tempera, acrylic paint and a variety of mixed media. Not only will we cover the technical aspect of fine art, but we will also cover artistic philosophy, history, and criticism as well as their aesthetic effects on cultural, societal, historical and personal spheres.
Attendance and Late Work
This class focuses on in class assignments and projects. Each project builds on skills learned in prior projects, so it is imperative that you try to keep up with the projects as presented. All tardies and absences must be dealt with through the standard procedures of Los Alamitos High School. Extensions on work will only be granted if prior arrangements are made with the instructor and with an excused absence from the attendance office. All work can be resubmitted for a higher grade up until the end of the semester as long as the original assignment is turned in on the assigned date.
Grades
Student grades will be based off of written assignments, in class work, student sketchbooks, projects, overall participation. Grades for all said assignments will be posted online through Aeries.
In class work: All work contained in your Class Sketchbook
• Warm ups – Every Tuesday and Thursday
• Written Work – Notes, responses, critiques, etc.
• Drawn Work – All project examples, sketches and examples
Projects: Projects will have their own turn in dates, so pay attention to the class calendar.
Homework: All work is graded through the sketchbook on Mondays
• Image Morgues / Image Resources – Resource images used for projects and warm ups
• Unfinished Work – Finish you work before grading day on every Monday
The Grading Scale will be as follows:
A 100 to 90
B 89-80
C 79-70
D 69-60
F 59 to 0
Procedures and Behaviors
Students are expected to follow the three tenants of respect.
Respect Each Other: All language and actions shall respect the instructor and the other students in the class. This includes respect for each others’ work, both the physical project and intellectual rights of the work.
Respect the Classroom: Students will be responsible for the care and upkeep of the classroom including desks, chairs, sinks and all storage areas. Students will help clean up the class periodically throughout the course. No food or drinks other than water will be permitted in the classroom.
Respect the Supplies: All supplies must be handled with care and used according to their purpose to maintain their integrity. Consumable supplies such as paints and paper should not be used in excess or wasted.
All electronics including phones are not to be used in the class without consent by the teacher on approved classroom assignments.
Los Alamitos High School Academic Honesty Code
Los Alamitos High School requires all students to abide by ethical standards in honesty and integrity. All work must represent original work. All attempts to cheat, steal or plagiarize any work will result in disciplinary action up to and including: receiving no credit on assignment, reduction in grade, suspension, dismissal from student offices and all athletics and extracurricular activities, involuntary transfer and/or expulsion. This policy covers all school related assignments, quizzes, reports, and projects, both in and out of class.
